Matt Martel
Executive Editor, Photo & Presentation, The Sydney Morning Herald
Matt Martel is Executive Editor for Photography and Presentation at Fairfax's The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne) and the Australian Financial Review. He leads a staff of about 100 photographers, designers, graphic artists, illustrators and developers who create award-winning visual content across all platforms.
His team wins many awards each year, including recently winning five digital Society for News Design awards, a record for the region.
Matt originally trained as a text journalist, but has worked as a graphic artist and designer for the past decade. He previously worked for the NZ Herald, as well as The Sun and The Guardian in London. In the late 90s he raised venture capital and started a short-lived content marketing business. It was a bit ahead of its time.
